Edward P. Jones' newest book 'All Aunt Hagar's Children,' is collection of 14 short stories that mostly take place in Jones' native Washington, D.C. Many of the characters from his first collection of short stories, 'Lost in the City,' find themselves in this new collection. This adds to the sense of continuity, not just from the perspective of family but from his characters connection to their not so distant southern past. This connection displays a constant struggle for the characters as they try to balance duty to others with their new found freedom and the cultural differences between the north and south. These 14 stories highlight Jones' ability to sketch characters that are fallible, noble and have a whiff
of hope that is dangling within their grasp.
