Rose and Ruby are twins joined at the side of the head. Rose's face is deformed and Ruby's body never fully developed, so Rose carries Ruby wherever they go in their small hometown near Toronto. Larsens gives each sister a voice, with her novel acting as the autobiography the sisters write together as they approach their thirtieth birthday. This novel eloquently carries themes of loneliness and personal courage while illustrating the sisters' contradicting desires for separation and togetherness.
